Gua Sha, also known as scraping therapy, is an ancient healing technique that has been used for centuries to treat various ailments. It works by promoting circulation and strengthening the body’s defenses, making it a popular method for both treating and preventing illnesses. By scraping along the meridians (energy pathways) on the skin, this technique opens the pores, stimulates blood flow, and enhances the body’s regulatory functions.

The repeated scraping action increases local blood vessel function, improves microcirculation, activates cells, and aids in the removal of toxins and metabolic waste. The ultimate goal of Gua Sha is to boost the body's natural regulatory systems, strengthen immunity, and promote overall well-being.

How Gua Sha is Performed

The procedure involves using smooth-edged, rectangular scraping tools (often made of stone or horn) along with massage oil for lubrication. After the treatment, small patches of cutaneous bleeding (called "sha") may appear on the skin, turning purple or purplish-black after 12 hours. For those with weaker constitutions, mild fatigue may occur after the session. However, this discoloration and fatigue typically resolve within 5 to 7 days.
